On August 18, 2014, NHTSA released an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM), effectively initiating a rulemaking that would ultimately propose to create a new FMVSS 150 to require vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication capability for light vehicles (passenger cars and light truck vehicles) and to create minimum performance requirements for V2V devices and messages.
In conjunction with issuing the 34 page ANPRM, NHTSA has also docketed a 327 page report entitled, Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications: Readiness of V2V Technology for Application. The report presents the results of NHTSA’s initial V2V research efforts. This includes a preliminary estimate of the costs of V2V and the benefits for two V2V-based safety applications (Intersection Movement Assist (IMA) and Left Turn Assist (LTA)). The report also explores technical, legal, security and privacy issues related to the implementation of V2V. Via the ANPRM, NHTSA is soliciting public comment on the research report and additional information, data, and analysis that will aid the agency in developing an effective proposal to require new light vehicles to be V2V-capable.
Comments in response to the ANPRM will be due 60 days following publication in the Federal Register (Oct. 20, 2014). The ANPRM was published in the Federal Register on Aug. 20, 2014. For a copy, click here.
