On March 22, 2008, Transport Canada published a Part I proposal in the Canada Gazette (page 822) that would relax section 215 of Schedule IV of the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations by permitting compliance with European and U.S. bumper requirements. According to Transport Canada, the proposed amendment would result in one consistent set of globally regulated test speed requirements for the design of bumpers, which would simplify the task of designing bumpers for vehicles destined for North American and European markets. The proposal would also facilitate the introduction in Canada of the impending Global Technical Regulation for pedestrian safety, being developed under the auspices of the UN/ECE. Comments on the proposal are due April 21, 2008.
