On May 17, 2011, the ANSI Electric Vehicle Standards Panel (EVSP) held a kickoff meeting to provide an overview of the project, discuss organizational matters, scope, architecture and timeline. The stated mission of the EVSP is “to foster coordination and collaboration on standardization matters among public and private sector stakeholders to enable the safe, mass deployment of electric vehicles and associated infrastructure in the U.S. with international coordination, adaptability and engagement.
Based on the overview provided by the organizers, the EVSP will focus primarily on developing a U.S. roadmap for EV codes and standards. To a large extent, the activity is being undertaken “to inform strategic policy discussions.” According to EVSP organizers, many policy makers hold the view that EV codes and standards present a major obstacle to the successful large scale deployment of EVs in the U.S. Hence, EVSP organizers believe that a roadmap is needed to educate policymakers that EV codes and standards are adequately being addressed. It is the goal of the EVSP to have this EV codes and standards roadmap completed by October of this year.
As envisioned by the organizers, the roadmap will be developed by eight working groups. The 8 WGs include the following:
Vehicle Domain
- Energy Storage Systems WG
- Vehicle Components WG
- Vehicle User Interface WG
Infrastructure Domain
- Charging Systems WG
- Infrastructure Communications WG
- Infrastructure Installation WG
- Infrastructure User Interface WG
Support Services Domain
- Education and Training WG
As a starting point, the EVSP organizers have put together a matrix of selected standards activities and coordination initiatives that are already underway.
