On December 2, 2009, NHTSA published an NPRM in the Federal Register at 74 FR 63180 proposing to establish a new safety standard for ejection mitigation (FMVSS 226). The new standard would apply to motor vehicles with GVWR of 4,536 kg (10,000 lb) or less.
Assuming that a final rule is issued in January 2011, NHTSA proposes to phase-in the new requirements according to the following schedule:
· 20% for the production year starting 9/1/14;
· 40% for the production year starting 9/1/15;
· 75% for the production year starting 9/1/16;
· 100% of all vehicles manufactured on or after 9/1/17. for illustration, September 1, 2017.
