On March 3, 2009, NHTSA will publish an interim final rule extending for six months a requirement that trailers with ABS be equipped with an external antilock malfunction indicator lamp. The requirement, which is contained in FMVSS 121, was scheduled to sunset on March 1, 2009. With this interim final rule, the sunset date is now September 1, 2009. A separate notice (also to be published March 3) will propose to further extend the sunset to March 1, 2011. Comments on the notices are due in 30 days.
