CARB has issued MAC 2009-01 which outlines the process for implementing the new Environmental Performance (EP) label. The EP label is required to be displayed on new passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles that are produced on or after January 1, 2009. The EP label replaces the Smog Index label and provides a Global Warming (GW) score and a Smog score on a 1-to-10 scale, a score of ten being the best/cleanest. The MAC explains the procedures for manufacturers to gain approval for their EP label format and scores. Among other things, it also explains the evaluation process, including the process for approving greenhouse gas emissions credits for improvements of the air conditioning system design and control.
