In January of 2009 NHTSA released 2007 calendar year data from it new Not-in-Traffic Surveillance (NiTS) system which is a data collection system designed to provide counts and details regarding fatalities and injuries that occur in non-traffic crashes and in non-crash incidents. For 2007, the system produced an overall annual estimate of 1,747 fatalities and 841,000 injuries in non-traffic crashes and non-crash incidents. More than half of the non-crash fatalities occurred when a vehicle fell on a person who was under it or from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. The most common types of non-crash injuries were injuries while entering or exiting a vehicle, injuries from closing doors and injuries from overexertion such as while unloading cargo or pushing a disabled vehicle. The NiTS system (http://www-nass.nhtsa.dot.gov/BIN/logon.exe/airmislogon) is designed so that the user can run queries to identify injuries and/or fatalities by issue (advanced airbags, side airbags, advanced occupant protection system, alt fuel vehicles, child safety, backover, CO poisoning, hyper/hypothermia, power windows, trunk entrapment, roll away and others). A two page summary of 2007 data can be found in the document titled, Not-in-Traffic Surveillance 2007- Highlights.
