On July 7, 2008, NHTSA is expected to publish a final rule in the Federal Register proposing to rescind FMVSS 219, “Windshield zone intrusion.”
Established in 1975, FMVSS 219 specifies limits on the displacement of vehicle parts from outside the occupant compartment into the windshield area during a 48 km/hr frontal barrier crash test.
Given the effect of safety standards issued since 1975 (e.g., FMVSS 208, Occupant Crash Protection and FMVSS 113, Hood Latch System) which similarly limit windshield zone intrusion into the passenger area, NHTSA has tentatively concluded that a safety need no longer exists to maintain FMVSS 219 as a safety standard.
