A new NHTSA report, “Driver Distraction: A Review of the Current State-of-Knowledge, DOT HS 810 704 - April 2008” reports on the issue of driver distraction with the objective of helping state and local governments formulate effective policies, regulations and laws. The report discusses the effects of cell phones, navigation systems and other in-vehicle technological advancements and their potential for distraction. The report also addresses the effectiveness of countermeasures that have been developed, including laws restricting cell phone use. Finally, the report identifies what additional research is needed to better understand and address the problem of driver distraction.
